Volunteer

A great way to improve the work skills of recent graduates, boost their resume, and, most importantly, help out their community at the same time is to volunteer! If you are hoping to improve skills that would be applicable for potential jobs, help them find a cause they are passionate about and find ways to volunteer and help that cause doing the skill that they want to improve. The recent graduate could be a whiz at this particular thing and just want to keep practicing or a newbie that wants to build up their skill. Either way, help is help and most organizations not only want but actually need that assistance. If they are willing to spend their time helping them out, the cause is most likely are not going to turn them down.

For example, if the recent graduate wants to get better at social media and you love animals, why not find a local rescue that needs help maintaining their social media accounts? That way you can improve your social media skills and help out these animals in need. And this provides tangible proof and results that you can show future employers as examples of your work in that area.

If the recent graduate likes web design, they could offer to make or update a website for a local cause. If they want to go into education,  they could volunteer to help teach a subject to children or adults in need. If they want to work with animals, they could volunteer at a local shelter or zoo (if their town has one). There are so many ways for them to use your skills to help out their community as well as so many causes and organizations that need their help. They can definitely make great use of their time improving their work skills this way!

Get Certified

Another awesome way that recent graduates can work on their skills is to get certified. There many different programs out there that can help them get certified in pretty much any field that they are looking to improve in. Employers love it when they have certifications because it demonstrates concrete proof that they have experience and skill in a particular subject.

There are so many options so they can get certified in whatever medium is the best fit for them, whether that be online or in person. They can find options simply by googling (though you will want to investigate and makes sure the source is a reputable one that employers will appreciate). Lynda.com is a great online resource for a variety of different programs and classes they can take to get certified. If they want something more in person, check out what their local colleges and universities are offering. They do not need to be a full-time student in order to participate in certificate programs at most institutions.

They can also see what local groups and non-profits related to their field are offering that might work for them. Remember, just about every person can find a certificate program that will help them in some area of their career.

Take A Class

If your recent graduate has a specific skill they want to improve and they are not necessarily interested in getting a certification, they can always take a class to gain that particular skill. They want to learn to paint better? Take a class! They want to learn about real estate? Take a class! They want to learn the basics of marketing? You guessed it—they can take a class!

Local organizations, colleges (they do not have to be a full-time student to take an occasional class or two, usually), and more offer courses that might interest them and help them to improve their work skills. They just have to look! Lynda.com is also a great resource for this, even if they are not interested in a certificate.

Whatever field you are recruiting in, there are always outlets for your recruits to take and show initiative by improving their work skills. Encourage them not to be afraid to go outside of their comfort zone and try something new, with new people, in new places. They would be surprised where it takes them!
